This revised edition of Lawrence Dunn's first illustrated map concentrates on the Vendée Militaire of 1793 - 1796, whilst his second map includes the Chouannerie also. Lawrence Dunn divides his time between the Vendée and Essex. These maps provide an excellent summary of the wars - a must for anyone interested in the Vendée and its history. |
The Vendée Wars, after the French Revolution of 1798, were a particularly difficult period in French history. The fact that the Vendée counter revolutionary wars were so spontaneous and popular, calls into question some of the aims of those in charge of the early years of the French Revolution, with its middle-class atheistic leaders. It is only in recent years that the French government has begun to acknowledge the horrors of what was perhaps the first modern western European genocide. ![]() |
